This is what to expect at your pedicure appointment

Published on 30 October 2021 - Last updated on 26 April 2022 by Beth Ryan

Rumour has it, the average person walks the equivalent of four times around the world in their lifetime. That’s a lot of strain on those feet folks, and enough reason to head for a pedicure. If you’re yet to try the treatment (what), you’re missing out on some serious pampering. A proper pedi can soothe, soften skin, and even help your posture – you’ll walk more comfortably on cared-for feet. If the thought of sliding out your sandals for an hour for some foot TLC makes you nervous, don’t be, this is a go-to guide of everything that goes down in a pedi appointment.

      1 Soothing soak

A traditional pedicure usually begins with a foot bath. Here, your feet are cleansed in warm (often scented) water for around five minutes to soften the skin, ready for treatment. This also helps to ease muscle strain (and the gentle vibrations are seriously stress-releasing). It’s like a mini jacuzzi for your feet and may, or may not, be the main reason I indulge in pedicures.

      2 Exfoliation

Out of the water, it’s time for a good scrub (and maybe a massage). An exfoliating rub, with salts or minerals, will slough away dead skin. Any areas of hardened skin (like calluses), or rough patches will be softened up too. There’s no need to be embarrassed by any feet woes, like extreme dryness, that’s what the pedi’s for. Better yet, exfoliation will increase circulation and stimulate lymph flow: that helps protect the body against viruses. See, good for your health.

      3 Nail prep

We’ve probably all been known to leave our toe polish lingering a little too long, topping up chips on the monthly, without removing and starting a’fresh. Underneath those two years of polish (for real), your nails could be brittle, dull and breeding infection. Grim, but true. Your pedicurist will recognise these concerns, and work to resolve. Starting with a trim and file of the toenails, then pushing back cuticles. Just like a regular mani, but maybe a little more ticklish.

      4 Sandals on

A lick of polish comes next. You could go for gel to make your mani last longer – otherwise known as the two-week pedi – or choose classic, if you fancy switching up the colour more often. Bright shades are a good pick for summer (groundbreaking), while pastels pair well with every outfit. If you like things to match – Bey and Jay, wine and cheese, or, you know, socks, – try a mani/pedi. Then sandals on gang, you’re good to go.
