An expert told us why we should try a hammam ritual (spoiler: you’re going to want to too)

The idea of having someone else clean and scrub your body may feel a little strange but it’s been a part of Moroccan culture for hundreds of year. And things that have been around for that long tend to be pretty good, right? *Googles when wine was invented*. We spoke to Zara Williams from The Spa in Dolphin Square, London, about why everyone should try a hammam cleansing ritual.

    By Beth Ludolf

    • 1 What is a hammam?

It’s a cleansing ritual that originated centuries ago in the Middle East. “In Morrocco, people attend the hammam weekly for equal parts deep cleansing and socialising”, Zara explains. It’s like the original girl’s spa day.

    • 2 Why should I try it?

The benefits of hammam go well beyond ultra-soft skin (although that is still a big one). Zara explains, “The hot steam relaxes muscles, boosts the immune system helps release toxins while the exfoliation invigorates the senses”. Say no more.

    • 3 What happens during a hammam ritual?

According to Zara, traditional hammam rituals have several steps. First, your Tellak (hammam therapist) will douse you with water before applying black soap – head to toe – exfoliating your whole body with a kessa glove and finishing with a moisturising lotion.

    • 4 Where does the hammam take place?

It all goes down in the hammam chamber. “The chamber is basically like a steam room with a fountain for the Tellak to take water from.”, says Zara, “It’s hot and humid which opens up the pores for a deeper clean.”
