6 things your hairdresser wishes you knew

Published on 9 January 2019 by Beth Ryan

I like to think that if I could see inside my hairdresser’s mind, they’d be appreciating the fine condition of my well-nourished locks, and not fearing for the fresh fake tan naively sat a’top my skin (about to get hella streaky). Bad cosmetic choices aside, your hair stylist is a magician with the scissors, so to make sure you get the most out of your cut, colour or blow dry, we summed up everything they reallywish you knew.

    By Rachel Spedding

    • 1 Take inspiration

Taking a picture (or five) with you to the salon is an easy means to get the result you’re going for. Especially when it comes to colour (try describing caramel blonde without a picture of Blake Lively – tricky, tricky). It’s important to be realistic with your expectations too – brown to platinum is a big job – but images will help your stylist to envisage what you’re after.

    • 2 They'll know if you're lying

Make sure you’re honest about box-dye fiascos, or gone-wrong ombrés. Your stylist will need to professionally assess the actions needed to get your locks back on form (without causing damage if your hair has been chemically treated). If you want your do to look like that inspo picture you’ve brought with, you’ll need to ‘fess up.

    • 3 If it needs cut, cut it

One of life’s hardest lessons – accepting that getting a trim truly does make hair grow. Yes hair grows from the root, but split ends through the length need to be chopped off, or it’ll fail to ever get passed your shoulders. An inch makes all the difference (to your hair’s health that is – it’ll go pretty much unnoticed aesthetically). If your stylist says you need a cut, accept it, welcome the scissors, and welcome bouncy locks all ready to grow.

    • 4 Speak up if you're not happy

More often than not, that quick glance at the back of our head in the mirror is followed by us mumbling ‘yeah great, perfect’ (and feeling sort of silly – it’s just a head?). But, if you’re not happy, you need to speak up. If the colour isn't quite right or you want more length off, be honest. Hairdresser’s are pros, they’ll listen to your feedback and come up with a game plan.

    • 5 Care between visits

Remember that once you’re out the salon, it’s up to you to keep your hair in prime condition. Though we’re maybe all guilty of waiting 12 months a little too long between salon visits, looking after your locks with specialist products and frequent trims will make for an easy hair appointment each time (and more compliments, obviously). Ask for advice on maintenance, product recommendations, styling and the like. They’re the ones in the know.

    • 6 Be on time

Let’s face it, when you’re in a rush, every car is slower, every tube tube is held at a ‘red signal’ andno one respects the zebra crossing. But, ‘five minutes late’ makes a huge difference to your hairstylist. It could sacrifice a tea break, delay their getting home, or hold up a whole host of appointments. Try to let your stylist know if you’re running late or, better yet, leave super early and grab yourself a coffee. Winner.
